About the artist:

Josephine Fletcher is from Hornby island having grown up with the arrival of the draft dodgers and counter culture generation. She has painted most of her life, usually outdoors on the landscape with oils on canvas. In 1983 Josi graduated with a Diploma of Arts from the Emily Carr University of Art in Vancouver, BC. She has since travelled extensively, returning to show her works over the years at the Hornby Island Community Hall as well as on the islands of Haida Gwaii and Vancouver. Josi now makes her home on Salt Spring Island with her son of 15. This is her first solo art exhibit in Tofino.

“With my paints and canvas I roamed the shores of the West Coast in all weather, finding places that I could put down with colour, shape and form. I saw before me, in an absolutely stunning, wild windswept coast, a light from the great Pacific Ocean. This dynamic landscape caused one to be astonished by its beauty.

I first lived out on Vargas Island in 1990 with the generous help of the Buckles.  They ran an Inn for adventurous sorts as well as a sawmill. Vargas was a land of glass floats and wolves with amazing light and foam from ocean storms. I got to live in a cabin near an outer coast lagoon and had to carry my belongings for an hour and half island traverse before getting home, sometimes wading through tides and swamps. It was a wild, inspiring, magnificent time. I return to Tofino from time to time to visit my friends.”
