Tofino BC Whale Watching

Whether you come experience the annual March/April arrival of 20,000 migrating gray passing by our shores on their way to Alaska, or catch them in October as they migrate back to the Baja Peninsula in October, whales are celebrated and spotted almost year-round in Tofino.

Spotlight on Whale Watching
– March thru October

Since 1986 Tofino, Ucluelet and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve have kicked-off the season with the Pacific Rim Whale Festival in March; a weeklong line-up of culinary events and family fun including parades and sand castle building contests.

Tofino BC Whale Watching Tours
As whale watching from shore can be a challenge, the best way to see the whales – specifically Pacific Gray and possibly Humpback – is to take a tour with one of Tofino’s many whale watching charter companies. Choose from an open Zodiac-style boat complete with a warm, red safety suit, or take a covered aluminum craft. Be sure to ask the whale watching experts which is best for you, and if seasickness is an issue, they can assist with recommendations.

Most whale watching trips last between 2-3 hours. You will also likely encounter bald eagles, harbour seals, Steller and California sea lions, sea otters and, if you are very lucky, orca whales or porpoises. The price and policies for adults and children wishing to go whale watching in Tofino vary according to vessel type, trip length and services offered. You can find departure times throughout the day, including sunset whale cruises.
