Fishing in Tofino BC
From offshore salmon and halibut fishing to inshore saltwater or fresh water flyfishing, Tofino’s waters are teeming with fish and charter options.
Some charter companies host single or multiple boat groups, while others tend to run with a single vessel – everything from a 5.2 metre (17 foot) open inshore craft for fly fishing or light tackle, to a 9+ metre (30+ foot) covered cruiser for offshore excursions.
Salmon fishing in Clayoquot Sound usually targets one of two species: Coho (or silver) salmon and Chinook (or King) salmon. Both species can be caught near-shore (or inshore) and offshore. For a tasty memento of your Tofino fishing experience, ask your guide about the local services available for smoking salmon. You can even have a local chef cook your catch!
Tofino’s Halibut fishing is also excellent. Charter companies will take you into offshore waters to experience that.
Remote freshwater fishing options are available for those willing to travel farther afield. Floatplanes provide anglers access to streams and lakes in wild settings within Clayoquot Sound. The sought-after Steelhead, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout inhabit these waters. Note that fish caught on remote freshwater excursions are carefully released. So be sure to bring your camera to help capture the memories!
If you are planning to go fishing without a guide, Tofino has a full service fly and tackle shop, plenty of marine services and lots of local advice. Use extra caution and common sense if you plan any boating in the area.
WARNING: It is illegal to fish anywhere without a fishing license. Double check that your guide service has taken care of this, or purchase your own if you are fishing without a guide. Freshwater fishing licenses are ONLY available for purchase online here. Saltwater fishing licenses are available online here, and in Tofino at Clayoquot Ventures and Method Marine.
