This born-again sport is gliding across the waters of Clayoquot Sound.

The birthplace of stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) was just down our Pacific coast,  in 1950s Waikiki.  Surf instructors would stand up on their longboards and paddle past the lineup, using their upright position to keep an eye on their students and the incoming swell while snapping photos of the action.  Today, SUP is making a comeback, just in time for your time in Tofino.
Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is a derivative of surfing, but is not considered an extreme sport.  In traditional surfing, one would lie prone on the surfboard and use their arms to paddle until they “pop up” to standing position.  Stand Up Paddleboarders remain standing at all times and use an oversized paddle to navigate the both the surf and flat water.

Today, SUP is seen as the fastest growing water sport on the planet for its relation to surfing, ease of progression, fitness benefits and particularly in Tofino, a fulfilling sense of natural immersion.  SUP provides a full body workout and great core strengthening while offering connection to nature.

If venturing out on your own paddle board, please be aware of safety for yourself and others on the water.  The weather and ocean conditions here on the West coast of Vancouver Island can be unpredictable, sudden and extreme.  Learn the local areas, tides, current weather condition, upcoming forecast and the beaches’ different rip currents. Better yet, take a lesson or hire a knowledgeable guide for your Tofino SUP adventure.
