Winter Storm Watching in Tofino BC

Tofino’s favourite spectator sport.

When the much-anticipated Storm Season arrives, rain, sun, wind, and tides all combine to make sure no two storms are created equal.

Storm watching was made in Tofino, and every November through February, it returns on its own terms. With temperatures hovering above the freezing mark, snow is a rarity here. But even that can happen.

Storm watching is more than a season; it’s a thing to do, and a state of mind. It’s a time when wind-sculpted trees lean in to howling gales. Rainfall performs its duty in this temperate rainforest, taking breaks for joyful sunbursts. Massive driftwood logs seem as light as matchsticks as they are shuffled up and down the beach by powerful tides.

Puddle jumping is for all-ages, and a daytrip to Hot Springs Cove is a shockingly beautiful and often solitary experience.

Tofino in winter can be equal parts passive observation, and full-on immersion. Storm watching is often standing where the beach meets the forest, suited in full raingear, as you watch the giant surf roll in at what seems like slow motion. Storm watching is also enjoyed inside, warmly wrapped in fireside blankets, sharing laughs, making memories, and eating Tofino-crafted comfort food. Our chefs sure know how to warm a stormy night with local flavour if you choose to venture out.

As Tofino’s streets glisten with rain, walk briskly to your chosen inside destination, an art gallery, a quirky shop, or maybe a restaurant a friend recommended. As you enter, feel the warm embrace of this rugged coast in storm season, where lights and friendly faces shine brightly amid the wild natural elements.

This is your winter to storm watch in Tofino.
