Friends of Clayoquot Sound (FOCS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1979 by conservation-minded, local people. We campaign to protect Clayoquot Sound’s globally rare ancient temperate rainforest and its biologically rich ocean ecosystem. Over the years, we have saved tens of thousands of hectares of magnificent old growth forest from logging thereby helping to maintain Clayoquot Sound’s status as the largest area of ancient forest left on Vancouver Island.

During our first campaign, FOCS and First Nations stood together in 1984 to prevent clearcutting of Meares Island, Tofino's water source and viewscape, which remains unlogged to this day. In 1993, FOCS organized mass protests that focused world attention on continued logging of Clayoquot’s ancient forests and resulted in less logging and improved practices.

Public education, research, market campaigns and negotiations with government and industry are other, less visible aspects of our work.

We continue to advocate for more protection for Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2000. We are working toward a conservation future for Clayoquot Sound that would protect its unlogged wilderness valleys and create a diversified, low-impact economy to bring long-term ecological and economic sustainability to the area.

Our Environmental Info Centre is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm. Come in and learn about the spectacular rainforest and marine environment of Clayoquot Sound and how you can help protect it.

FOCS memberships, posters, t-shirts, cards, and books are sold to help raise money and awareness for our campaigns.
