Tourism Tofino - A Force of Nature

Wildlife Adventures

In Tofino, remarkable wildlife viewing is available, right outside your doorstep! With a guided tour, you can walk, paddle or cruise along and gain access to the natural habitats of wild animals, while still maintaining a discrete and respectful distance. Feast your eyes on a salmon leaping out of the water, or a furry-faced sea otter savouring a sea urchin as it floats on its back. See a black bear amble across the shoreline looking for an afternoon snack of barnacles and shellfish, these are Tofino wilderness moments not to be missed.

One of the goals of a Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is to promote sustainability for both the local communities and their natural environment, and this growing form of adventure tourism demonstrates how this can be successfully accomplished. When you go, dress warmly and appropriately for the weather (polar fleece is always handy), don't forget the sunscreen or rain gear, and bring along your gear to capture the moment.

Bear Watching

Another reminder of the wildness of the Tofino area is the presence of black bears, from roughly May to October. These burly foragers maintain an omnivorous diet (in short, they eat mostly everything!), including lots of herbs, berries, and nuts. However, they are a delight to watch as they lumber across the coastal shoreline at low tide, rolling over rocks and searching through tide pools in their quest for the dayâs meal of Rock Crab, shellfish, barnacles, and other tasty edibles. Tofino bear watching trips usually last 2 to 3 hours, and are offered in rigid-hull zodiacs, or covered vessels.
