Hiking

Under the evergreen canopy of a rainforest trail, along a mountain ridge to a spectacular lookout, skirting the edge of eelgrass covered mudflats or across miles of hard-packed sand… hiking opportunities are varied and seemingly endless within the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Some notable hikes include the boardwalk and beach of the Schooner Cove Trail, the wheelchair-accessible Radar Hill Trail, and the Big Tree Trail of Meares Island in Tofino Inlet.

A more rugged Tofino hike, also on Meares Island, is the Stairmaster-like Lone Cone at an elevation of 730 metres/2,395 feet, if you’re up to it. Take a 45 minute water taxi to Flores Island, and walk the Wildside Heritage Trail connecting the First Nations community of Ahousat to the outer beaches of the island. Note that these last two trails require stamina – and permission at the trailhead, as access is not public.

Or, just find a beach and walk ’till your heart’s content.
